Expanding Creative Opportunity: Arts & Culture for All

At the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF), we believe arts and culture are essential to a thriving, connected community. They reflect who we are, tell our stories, and create space for expression, understanding, and belonging. Through our Arts and Culture Program, we continue investing in strengthening creative opportunities across Washtenaw County with a strong focus on equity and inclusion.

Centering Equity in Arts & Culture

Access to arts and culture has not always been equitable. This program prioritizes initiatives that center racial equity, uplift diverse voices, and expand opportunity for all. AAACF is committed to supporting projects that collaborate with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, as well as organizations led by BIPOC leaders. The goal is to ensure everyone in Washtenaw County can see themselves reflected in and supported by the arts.

“Arts and culture thrive when equity is at the center. Through AAACF’s S.E.E.D.S. initiative, we are investing in conditions where creativity and communities can truly flourish.”  -  Amina Iqbal, AAACF Senior Community Investment Officer.

Supporting Artists, Organizations, and Community Impact

This program takes a holistic approach to building a strong creative ecosystem. Funding supports individual artists, arts education, and pathways to economic opportunity through creativity. Priorities include mentorship, professional development, and resources for BIPOC artists to grow sustainable careers.

We also invest in arts-based entrepreneurship, digital capacity building, and vocational training - helping organizations expand their reach while equipping individuals with skills for creative career pathways. Together, these efforts strengthen both the cultural and economic fabric of our region.

Investing in Community-Led Creativity

At its core, this work is about empowering communities to shape their own creative futures. By supporting local organizations and collaborative projects, AAACF ensures the arts reflect the lived experiences, traditions, and identities of the people they serve. These investments build connection, creativity, and shared understanding across Washtenaw County.
