The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF) is proud to support initiatives that strengthen families and expand opportunities across Washtenaw County. One of our first childcare impact investments recently came to life with Apple Playschools’ newly renovated early childhood center.
Apple Playschools is a nonprofit early childhood education organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, offering both Green Apple Garden, an outdoor immersion program, and Manzanitas, a Spanish immersion playschool. Originally launched in 2011 as a small home-based child care, it became a nonprofit in 2014, expanding over time to multiple campus sites while grounding its approach in play-based, nature-centered, and anti-bias pedagogy.
A First-of-Its-Kind Investment
AAACF’s investment, a $750,000 loan paired with $100,000 in development grants, enabled Apple Playschools to complete construction and “right-size” the center for sustainable growth. This investment reflects our commitment to long-term solutions that support families, children, and the local community.

Block Party Celebration
On September 18, 2025, Apple Playschools' new school, located on the corner of Miller and Chapin in Ann Arbor, hosted a community block party to showcase their upgraded space and invite families, supporters, and local leaders to connect. From fun activities to thoughtful remarks, the event highlighted the power of partnership in creating meaningful impact.

Impact for Families and Community
The expansion of this new early childhood center has already generated tangible results:
- 12 new jobs created for local residents
- Enrollment capacity increased by nearly 50%, adding 47 new child care spots

Apple Playschools Executive Director Etta Heisler shared heartfelt remarks at the event, alongside AAACF President & CEO Rev. Dr. Shannon Polk, Esq. Together, they celebrated the transformative potential of impact investing to create opportunities that last for generations.
Looking Ahead
AAACF is committed to continuing efforts that strengthen families, support childcare, and create equitable access to opportunities in Washtenaw County. This first childcare impact investment is just the beginning of what we hope will be many collaborations that help our community grow stronger - together.
