AAACF Community Scholars

Community Scholarship Fund: $1,500 and $3,000 awards

The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation’s Community Scholarship provides scholarship awards to increase post-secondary degree attainment for Washtenaw County students with a specific focus on students who are economically disadvantaged, youth of color, and/or first generation (neither parent having graduated with a 4-year degree). Within the Community Scholarship Program, the Level the Playing Field Fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and gives preference to graduates of a Washtenaw County public high school.

The primary use of the award will be to support tuition and/or books.  A secondary purpose will be to support of other allowable educational expenses.

Number of Available Awards: TBD (three and five year awards)

Recipients may automatically renew their scholarship as described below, as long as they continue to meet the Scholarship Fund’s criteria.

Award Amounts:

  • 2-Year Institution: $1,500 renewable two times
  • 4-Year Institution: $3,000 renewable four times
  • If a student begins at a 2-year institution and transfers to a 4-year institution, they may transfer their award to the 4-year institution and it will be renewable three times at the higher scholarship level. 

Scholarship Criteria: 

  • Economically disadvantaged (currently or has in the past qualified for the free or reduced lunch program), youth of color, OR first generation (neither parent having graduated with a 4-year degree)
  • Resident of Washtenaw County
  • Will be or are a high school graduate within the last 24 months
  • Enrolling in college for the first time
  • Minimum GPA 2.0
  • To renew a scholarship, recipient must be enrolled in a college or university, maintain progress towards degree attainment and a 2.0 or above GPA, and submit a transcript and fall verification of enrollment to AAACF for review each summer

Required Materials:

  • Online scholarship application
  • Most recent high school transcript
  • Scholarship Recommendation Form- completed by someone who is not a relative or family member

Additional Information:

Recipients will have a College Success Coach through Washtenaw Futures. The College Success Coach will assist in supporting the student’s transition to higher education, help students to access the many opportunities available on their college campuses, and serve as a general resource for students throughout their college experience.

In addition, recipients will have access to the Emergency Aid & Financial Assistance Program which was designed to address exceptional financial hardships that could derail a student's path toward degree attainment.
