Erin Ryan Kiwanis Clubs of Plymouth Scholarship Fund: $1,000 Award

Established in 2014 by the Kiwanis Club of Colonial Plymouth, Plymouth Kiwanis Club, and Plymouth Kiwanis Foundation to honor the memory of Erin Ryan, a 1990 graduate of Salem High School who died in 1996 at the age of 24 of complications while fighting lymphoma.

The scholarship provides a $1,000 award. Schoolcraft College will match the scholarship with another $1,000 for recipients who enroll there.

Erin M. Ryan was born in 1972, the second child of Jim and Gail Ryan. Erin was a loving and giving person who firmly believed in helping others. She participated with her father in many Kiwanis projects. While at Salem High School, after she learned about a high-school level Kiwanis program, Erin quickly took to the task of organizing Salem's Key Club, recruiting and signing up the first members and serving as the Club's first President. In addition to Key Club, Erin also participated in Track, Ski Club, French Club, and the Honors Society. She was also very accomplished and active in photography, music and dance, and liked to go biking and rollerblading.

Erin attended Kalamazoo College, where she graduated in 1994 with a degree in international studies/economics. While in college, she  traveled throughout Europe, worked with the AMA in Chicago and enjoyed a six-month foreign study at Nagoya University in Japan, where she also taught English to young children.

At Kalamazoo College, Erin met her husband, Gregg, and they were married in 1994 at the Henry Ford Estate in Dearborn, MI, in a rose garden ceremony she planned. She and Gregg both worked at United Technologies Automotive in Dearborn until moving to American Yazaki.

In addition to her parents, Erin is survived by an older brother named Jim.
