Julia Segall-Derfler Fund for Understanding & Sharing Diversity
Family and friends of Julia Segall-Derfler established a memorial donor advised fund in late 2007 to honor the life of Julia-Segall Derfler - and her great personal commitment to the value of sharing the diversity of human culture and experience as a means to promote understanding among peoples of the world.
Raised in Ann Arbor, Julia attended Emerson School and Greenhills School, and graduated from Ann Arbor Huron High School in 2001. As a senior at Huron she received the school's Award for Understanding and Sharing Diversity. She graduated magna cum laude from the Georgetown University School of Languages and Linguistics in 2005, and did post-graduate training at the Georgetown Center for Advanced Proficiency in Arabic.
At the time of her death in November, 2007, Julia was working as an Arabic langage specialist at the U.S. State Department. Julia loved and embraced people as they were and celebrated their differences. She was of unique character and found joy in the quirks and distinctiveness of all people. A vibrant young woman, Julia lived with great integrity and touched many lives in her 24 years. This fund, established in her memory, will continue Julia's legacy.
