This week, we recognize key components of “community” in the Community Foundation.
Although we have adapted in many ways to this crisis, we have also maintained important fundamentals such as working with hundreds of community volunteers comprising all our committees. We would have announced Board of Trustee transitions, which occur annually on May 1st, at our now-cancelled Annual Community Meeting. Instead on Monday (and over the following weeks), we will recognize volunteers who have served for many years, new community members joining as Trustees, and Board Officers for 2020–21.
At this time, we want to pay tribute to a truly distinguished past AAACF Trustee who recently passed: Barbara Meadows. As her obituary details, Barbara made a lasting impact on nearly every sector of our community, and she served on many nonprofit boards, including ours. Along with fellow Trustees Willis Patterson and the late Joe Dulin, Barbara founded the African American Endowment Fund (AAEF) at AAACF. She also created the Ted & Barbara Meadows Endowment Fund to support grants made by AAAEF for its mission “to improve the physical, economic, social and educational conditions that affect the quality of life for African Americans in the Ann Arbor area.”
Beyond our community volunteers, AAACF continues to honor the leadership and solution-building that emerges from communities we serve, particularly during this pandemic.
We are pleased to partner with and send support through the Trusted Advisors program of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. Part of Success by 6 Great Start Collaborative's Great Start Parent Coalition, the Trusted Advisors program trains and supports parents from low-resourced neighborhoods to connect with other parents of young children, including through canvassing and community events, and to in turn connect families with early education programs and community services. The relationships that Trusted Advisors already built prior to the crisis are being leveraged to provide assistance to many families.
AAACF continues to update our dedicated COVID-19 webpage with resources for all members of our community, from individuals looking to become informed and engaged, to resources for nonprofits and businesses. The information includes updates on our Short-Term Cash Flow Loan Program, which so far has approved $245,000 in loans to six nonprofits across Washtenaw County.
As the dedicated endowment for Washtenaw County, we have deployed more than $1 million in grants across our community during this crisis — and we are committed to recovery and support for the post-pandemic future!
